Minecraft is a very dynamic, “Choose Your Adventure” game with many different creatures and challenges to add deeper meaning to your game-playing experience. But how do the animals, specifically goats, grub up to serve you?
Goats in Minecraft eat anything that is given to them, excluding experience orbs. These goats are mainly attracted to any item floating on the ground: tools, weapons, blocks, and diamonds. They will follow you around if you have anything edible on hand, so lock any valuables you have in your chest.
We will go more in-depth on how to get the Minecraft goat, how the Minecraft goat was born, and how you can best use the Minecraft goat to your advantage. To conclude, we will give some fun facts about everyone’s favorite animal.
How To Get The Minecraft Goat
Goats were finalized inside the game on the 3.1 Update on the Minecraft servers and can be found mostly on the Snowy Slopes Mountain Biome. They are also found in the Mountain Biome as well.
For those who would rather not upgrade, you are also able to get goats through the Bedrock Edition 1.16.200 full release. You can easily unlock them by purchasing additional add-ons. Source
The History Of The Minecraft Goat
In 2019, MINE-CON LIVE announced a new concept in which players could vote for which biome (different places you can play in on Minecraft) would receive major updates and new features.
In the convention, the Mountain Biome was given as a possible biome to update. Players expressed their desire before the event that the Mountain Biome wasn’t as challenging as they would’ve liked it to be, and most really wanted improvements.
On the official website, Minecraft announced the opportunity for players to vote on this option. The company said: “More jagged mountains! Goats! Snow you can lose yourself in (literally, watch your step)! It’s about time Mountains became a more challenging biome to explore, and get a brand new mob as well. If this is the biome you want to see updated next, vote for Mountains this Saturday during MINECON Live!”. Source
Popular Minecraft Developers Jens Bergensten and Agnes Larsson announced the birth of the Minecraft Goat as they “explore” the newly announced biome and stumble upon a goat innocently eating grass! At the end of the developer’s sales presentation, the goat runs away and the developers chase after the animal.
Here is how the Minecraft Goat was first implemented in the game:
Game Version | Corporate Action |
Version 3.1.0 | Goats were first added to the game permanently. Before this, goats were added but were quickly taken off. |
Version 3.2.0 | The way to tame goats changed. Instead of just giving the goat food, you need to right-click on the goat then feed him/her food. |
Version 5.2.0 | Fixed several technical bugs about the goat, such as invisible ropes on the goats. |
Version 8.0 | Developers decreased the frequency of goat bleats. |
Version 12.0.5 | Instead of feeding the goat empty bucket stacks, the game now allowed the option to feed the goats’ goat milk! |
Here is a debriefing on what was announced on MINE-CON LIVE (now simply called Minecraft Live).
All About The Minecraft Goat
Colors: Minecraft Goats roam in six different colors: white, grey, brown, white with grey spots, grey-brown, and white with brown spots.
Spawning: These goats will spawn in groups of four on an open grass space with light-level blocks.
Behavior: Minecraft Goats do not do too much for you personally, they are mainly created to roam around and eat anything that is in the way. In some circumstances, a goat can jump up to ten blocks high in the air!
Health: Minecraft goats take 20 less fall damage than other creatures in the game. Avoid walking through powdered snow with a goat, as they can try to jump through it and possibly get you injured.
Kinds of Minecraft Goats: There are male, female, and kid goats which all come with individual characteristics. Male goats are a little more defensive, high maintenance, aggressive, and will fight you if provoked. Female and kid goats tend to be a little less aggressive and are less bothersome.
Where To Find Goats: Goats can be found on top of high surfaces, such as cliffs (no matter what the weather is in the game). You are more likely to find goats in the daytime.
Taming Minecraft Goats: Any type of goat can be tamed for gaming use. To tame a goat, you will need to feed it any edible item and both types of golden apples. You will know your goat has been tamed when the naming screen appears.
Drops: Goats drop 0–2 leather and 1–3 experience when killed by a player or a tamed wolf. Source
Feeding The Goats: Female and kid goats can be milked if you use an empty bucket as you are filling it for the goats. Once your goats are tamed, be sure not to milk your male goats, or else they will attack you.
Fighting: Male goats will fight among each other, but no damage is taken. You can tell a goat is fighting when the creature is stomping its feet, raising its tails, and lowering its heads towards other goats. Goats tend to hurt each other pretty well, so it is recommended to have a high wall or to separate the mails if you need to put animals together.
